Reports of 13 cases of a disease believed to be mumps has caused concern at Fordham University.
According to the New York Post, the university announced there had been 10 cases since last month, nine of which appeared in the past three days alone. Within mere hours, that number had climbed to 13, with cases also being reported at Lincoln Center Campus in Manhattan and Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx.
The Post notes that while the disease has not been confirmed via lab tests, Fordham is confident that it's "the most likely diagnosis."
In a statement, university officials announced that infected students had either been isolated or sent home. "All the students with suspected mumps infections have either returned home or have been isolated from other residents during the infectious phase of the illness," school officials explained. "Typically mumps patients are contagious for two days prior to the outbreak of symptoms and five days after."
