The first week Japanese sales for the Wii U's Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze are in, and they're not pretty. Following the game's February 13 debut in Japan, 35,717 units have been sold, or about 35 percent of Nintendo's intial shipment, according to numbers released by the Japanese sales site Media Create.
Compared to Tropical Freeze, the Wii's Donkey Kong Country Returns was a much bigger success, with roughly 163,000 units sold; the game's 2013 3DS port did about 104,000 units. The Wii U's last big first party game, Super Mario 3D World, also underperformed to expectations, selling just shy of 100,000 units during its intial week of release in Japan back in November, though it eventually hit over 1 million copies sold worldwide.
While the Wii U continues to face flagging sales, Tropical Freeze could similarly see longer term success given its evergreen nature. Sales numbers in North America have yet to be disclosed, where the game has been on sale since Friday.
