If you’re the type that enjoys going to the movies over watching a live on-stage musical, Tim Minchin is working to bring you the best of both worlds. According to his website (via The Hollywood Reporter), Minchin is currently planning a musical adaptation of director Harold Ramis’ 1993 comedy classic, Groundhog Day. Minchin, who is most famous for the stage version of Matilda, will be providing the music and lyrics for the show, while Matthew Warchus will direct a script written by Danny Rubin.
“Our version of Groundhog Day is going to be both instantly recognizable, and utterly different,” Minchin promised on his site. “The central conceit is perfectly suited to the theatre, in my opinion. In fact, I think many of its ideas could be enhanced by the stage. It has the potential to be complex, dark, visually fascinating, and thematically rich, whilst still being a joyous romantic comedy with cool tunes and lots of gags. It’s certainly not an easy job, and I’m truly honoured – and genuinely excited – that Danny is letting me have a crack at it.”
Is it too much to hope that Bill Murray is willing to reprise his role as Phil Connors for the show? Don’t put money down on that one. Minchin is planning on holding a workshop for the show over the summer, but other than that, no timeframe has been given for a possible debut.
