Although it grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey topped the chart as the most pirated movie of 2013, according to Torrent Freak. The movie was shared an astounding 8.4 million times among users worldwide who apparently couldn’t be bothered to pay $10 to watch an army of dwarfs, hobbits, and wizards stroll through the forest for three hours. Other movies on the list include Django Unchained, Fast and Furious 6, Iron Man 3, and Star Trek into Darkness.
While many movie studios vilify piracy and claim that it will be the end of cinema, 2013 was the most successful year yet for the U.S. box office, with $11 billion in revenue being counted. With the tepid reviews most of the movies on this list received from fans and critics, maybe Hollywood should be worried that the quality of films will eventually hurt its bottom line, not pirates.
