A Long Island man has been accused of killing his mother with an ax last month.

On Dec. 9, Sean Farrell, 24, allegedly struck Bonnie Farrell-Connolly, 45, with the blunt side of an ax in the bedroom of her home. He then reportedly checked himself into Bellevue Hospital's psychiatric ward. Family members say that Farrell, who suffers from schizophrenia, had stopped taking his medication.

According to NBC New York, Farrell called his grandmother from the hospital and confessed to the murder. "Sean told me he was scared and confused. He told me he killed my daughter and that he was selfish and should have killed himself," Letitia Dunn told police. Dunn said that he added "I hope nobody is mad at me."

Gene Dunn, Farrell's grandfather, told the New York Post that Farrell-Connolly planned to take her son to the hospital. "Nobody saw this coming. We’re all blaming ourselves," he said.

Farrell was charged with second-degree murder. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life behind bars.
