The problem with a lot of sequels is that studios often have a hard time keeping the original cast together for another outing. Thankfully that won’t be an issue for SyFy and the Sharknado franchise, because according to Deadline, Ian Ziering and Tara Reid have signed on to return for another Z-list adventure, titled Sharknado 2: The Second One.

“We’re thrilled to be able to bring back the talent that made Sharknado a hit,” The Asylum COO Paul Bales said in an announcement. “Can lightning strike twice? I don’t know, but it’s a scientific fact that you’re more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark. This film will have lightning and sharks, so that’s got to count for something.”

Lightning and sharks and tornadoes? Fantastic. The plot for Sharknado 2: The Second One starts when “a freak weather system turns its deadly fury on New York City, unleashing a ‘sharknado’ on the city’s population and its most iconic sites, with Fin and April the only ones able to save the city.”

Sharknado 2 will start filming next month and premiere on SyFy some time in July. Apparently it doesn’t take long to pump out special effects that rival anything produced by a Sega Dreamcast.
