Has Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. felt a little too ordinary this season? Well that’s about to change, because according to Marvel, the comic book character Deathlok will make his debut on the show this season. The character of Mike Peterson (J. August Richards), who has been on the show since the beginning, will make the transformation into the vengeful cybernetic hero during the February 4 episode of the show. There is no word yet on if he'll be working with or against S.H.I.E.L.D., though.

In the comics, Deathlok isn’t named Mike Peterson, so the show is taking a few liberties with the characters’ origins. But it’s still a good sign that S.H.I.E.L.D. is looking to give fans a look at the expanded Marvel Universe. In the original books, Deathlok is a reanimated corpse/cyborg hybrid. The character debuted in Astonishing Tales#25 in 1974, and over the years multiple people have been transformed into the Deathlok persona.

Before appearing on S.H.I.E.L.D, Deathlok’s most high-profile brush with fame came as a background character in the Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage video game for Super Nintendo and Genesis. Now do you remember him?
