In what could be the biggest boon in console games – and video games in general – in years, China has decided to lift its long-time ban on foreign video game consoles allowing Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo to fight it out for a massive gaming market.
Reuters is reporting that the Chinese State Council will now allow the big three console producers to manufacture products within the Shanghai free trade zone and sell those products in China. This ends a 14-year ban on video game consoles and opens up a market so large that you can bet the executives over at the big three are foaming at the mouth right now.
China put the ban in place back in 2000 after the Chinese state raised concerns over the potential harm to physical and mental development of children from playing video games. However that didn't stop china from becoming one of the biggest PC video game markets in the world and gaming from becoming a huge social force. Now Chinese gamers will have the option of gaming on a PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U. Hopefully Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will be able to keep up with the demand.
