"X-Men: Days Of Future Past" Producer Wants Channing Tatum To Star In A "Gambit" Movie

He can't be any worse than Taylor Kitsch, right?

Remember how excited everyone was when it was announced that Taylor Kitsch would play Gambit in X-Men: Origins – Wolverine? Then remember how full of rage everyone was after they saw how terrible the whole thing was? Well it looks like X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Lauren Shuler Donner is trying to change all of that by getting a solo Gambit movie that actually respects the source material into production. The catch? She wants Channing Tatum to star in it.

In an interview with Empire, Donner said, "I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum." She continued, "That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart."

This goes hand-in-hand with a quote from Tatum during a White House Down press conference last year when he said, “I would like to play Gambit. Gambit’s my favorite. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real." He continued, "No knock on Taylor Kitsch, though, ’cause I actually like his Gambit, but I’ve always lived around Cajun people. Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He’s a thief. He kind of rode the line.”

Ever since the ‘90s X-Men cartoon, Gambit has had one of the more obsessed fanbases in comics. Unfortunately, he has suffered the fate of countless other X-Men after a disappointing big screen debut. However, both Tatum and comic book movies are at the height of their respective popularity, and with Donner pushing for this to happen, a proper Gambit movie might actually be in the cards. Pun fully intended.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will hit theaters on May 23.
