Michael Fassbender, the intense Irish actor seen most recently in 12 Years a Slave and The Counselor, has a great face. Usually, in movies like Hunger or X-Men: First Class, he puts it to use conveying unusual trauma or deep-seated anguish. It's a face that has seen and experienced things you cannot understand.
Which makes Frank, his upcoming 2014 release, pretty crazy. See, in that photo above, Fassbender is wearing a mask. From most early accounts of Lenny Abrahamson's weirdo rock music comedy, he'll wear it often in the movie, maybe for all of the movie. Inspired by the tales of artists like Captain Beefheart, Frank is about the confrontation between a young man with musical aspirations (played by Brendan Gleeson's son, Domnhall) and seasoned vet Frank (Fassbender). Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Frank's right-hand woman, Clara. —Ross Scarano
