Anton Corbijn, acclaimed photographer and music video, got into feature-length narrative filmmaking with the Ian Curtis biopic Control. Holy Christ was it heavy and hard to watch, even as Corbijn's gorgeous black-and-white cinematography amazed the eye. Of course, what could you expect?
For his latest film, Corbijn adapted beloved spy novelist John le Carré's A Most Wanted Man, about a German security official who becomes entrenched in the matter of a Chechen-Russian immigrant. Philip Seymour Hoffman does a rough German accent; le Carré's story critiques rendition under Bush II; everyone wins. —Ross Scarano
