Though Android passed 1 billion activations in September, the Google platform will reach the same number of active users in the coming months of 2014, says research firm Gartner. The big boost in users will come from new markets where phones and tablets with the OS will be budget priced, and as much as 75 percent of active users will come from those markets. In all, the firm says that the mobile phone shipments will reach close to 2 billion this year, and tablet shipments will go up 47 percent due to an increased popularity in smaller tablets. "There is no doubt that there is a volume versus value equation, with Android users also purchasing lower-cost devices compared to Apple users," said Annette Zimmerman, a Gartner analyst. "Android holds the largest number of installed-base devices, with 1.9 billion in use in 2014, compared with 682 million iOS/Mac OS installed-base devices."
