Big American Horror Story news! In a new interview with EW, creator Ryan Murphy revealed that season four—which won't premiere until late this year—will be set in 1950.
"It’s set in 1950...If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues in that year," he said. "It’s a period piece. We try and do the opposite of what we’ve done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I’m very excited!"
Murphy didn't reveal any more in this interview, other than that the final episodes of Coven will be "peppered" with hints about next season—so if you've got an eagle eye and an analytical mind, it might be worth keeping a look out for any hidden spoilers.
As for what 1950 and Lange playing a German character could mean for what the plot will consist of, that's not clear—but we do have some hints from past spoilers Murphy has given out that might help. For instance, back in November of last year, Murphy said the following of season four: "It’s not contemporary...it’s either going to shoot in New Orleans or it’s going to shoot in Santa Fe." Clue number one.
Then, in October of last year, Murphy revealed the following of Lange's character: "All I'll say is, Jessica Lange has always wanted to play a Marlene Dietrich figure, and now she gets to." Dietrich, of course, was a German actress back in the day, and one of the most popular actresses ever. Does this mean Lange is playing an actress? It might...
