Our parents formed bands. Our older siblings started blogs. We make web series. Creating a web series has become a rite of passage for millennials in recent years, as important to our generational identity as backpacking across Europe and defaulting on our student loan debt. We know what you’re thinking, “Gee, Complex Tech, I really want to make my own web series, but I don’t have any original ideas.” Don’t worry, nobody else does either. The beauty of the Internet is that you don’t have to have original ideas, you just have to persistently annoy your friends and favorite media outlets until you get coverage. A well placed email to your buddy who interned with Google last summer will get you better results than your “originality” ever could.

That doesn’t mean that you should go out there and follow just any retread premise. Some web series concepts are already so overdone that even your parents won’t watch the series that they took out a home equity loan to bankroll. Yes, there are some web series premises so tired that they’ll make your friends roll their eyes rather than click the play button. Today our mission is to help you avoid becoming just another shrill tired voice lost in cacophony of digital content. Here are 12 Web Series Premises to Avoid.
