If 2012 was the year of the cat, 2013 was the year of the fox.
YouTube just released its top 10 trending videos of the year, and it's probably not a surprise that the most annoying song of the year "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)" by Norwegian group Ylvis, claimed the top spot. The video went viral quickly, and spurred a ton of parodies, many of which bled into other social networks like Vine and Instagram. Almost all of the videos on YouTube's list are professional videos, and not the homemade cat or #FAIL videos we're accustomed to, which shows a big sign that companies and the like are slowly figuring out the secret ingredient to make something go viral.
"As 2013 comes to a close, these are some of the videos, channels, and moments that shaped our year. While each annual list is unpredictable (what's up, Mr. Miley Cyrus impersonator), trending videos just get bigger each year," YouTube's head of culture and trends Kevin Allocca said. "And with 80 percent of all views on YouTube coming from outside the US, the global community is driving pop culture unlike ever before."
