Working with the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications, the NYPD has created this interactive map of New York City, which they released because they had to.
Despite the fact that the 77 precincts were ordered to stop sharing crime reports with the media, the NYPD was forced to release this map because of a City Council ordinance that passed in the spring. What's more, Gothamist notes that all of this information has been available on the department's website for the past decade.
As for the actual map, users can access the locations of every reported felony in a given area from January through October 2013. Anyone interested in seeing the number of felonies according to precinct can tinker with the map to get that data as well.
