Earlier today reports broke of Nelson Mandela’s death. It is sad and unfortunate news, because to describe the South African revolutionary and liberator as anything less than a “force” would be inaccurate. He exemplified the best in mankind—big hearted, fiercely loyal, unwavering in the face of Apartheid, and self-sacrificing. Affectionately known as “Madiba,” he became the first black president of South Africa in 1994 after serving 27 years in prison. Among Mandela’s many accomplishments, his biggest was helping to end decades of racial segregation in his homeland. At 95, he lived a long and fulfilling life.
