It looks like the $300 million Port Authority spent on Newark Airport's security system was not $300 million well spent, because that someone compromised in an effort to get away from bad date.
Early Wednesday morning, Siyah Brown of Jersey City, N.J. hopped the Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) fence—which features cameras, barbed wire and sensors—as if it were nothing after escaping a terrible date that involved a vehicle running out of gas (how embarrassing). The 24-year-old was able to clear two runways before an employee spotted him and called authorities.
Following his arrest, Brown was checked against the FBI's watch list before being released. In the meantime, someone needs to figure out a more efficient (and probably less expensive) way to keep travelers at the Newark Airport safe. Airport officials are going to call this a one-off, but someone needs to think about why hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on something that failed to do its one job.
