For years, comic book fans screamed that Watchmen was unfilmable. They were wrong. They also said The Avengers could never unite in a movie. They were wrong again. And now one of the industry’s last untapped gems might be coming to theaters sooner than you think. According to Deadline, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in serious talks with Warner Brothers about directing and starring in an adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s seminal masterpiece, Sandman.
The site says that Gordon-Levitt is finalizing a deal to produce the movie right now, but all indications are that the deal also includes an agreement to be the film’s director and star as the protagonist. The movie will be based on a pitch by David Goyer, the writer behind Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Trilogy. A new writer will be hired shortly.
Sandman was created by Neil Gaiman for DC Comics back in 1989. It tells the story of Morpheus, the god of dreams, and the rest of his family, known as The Endless. It’s hailed as one of the great achievements in comics and helped pave the way for a more sophisticated brand of storytelling that would help form the company’s Vertigo division.
