The Internet Archive, a non-profit digital library of books, movies, audio files and web pages, is gifting you a second big Christmas with the premier of its new emulator feature, The Console Living Room.
Kids and adults these days are still pulling out shiny consoles from under the Christmas tree but these days they sadly lack keyboards and punch pads. But the consoles of yore still had some amazing games. Now the Internet Archive has put up an in-browser emulator for these sometimes amazing, sometimes terrible games.
“Like the Historical Software collection, the Console Living Room is in beta – the ability to interact with software in near-instantaneous real-time comes with the occasional bumps and bruises.” Says the press release for Internet Archive. “An army of volunteer elves are updating information about each of the hundreds of game cartridges now available, and will be improving them across the next few days. Sound is still not enabled, but is coming soon. Faster, more modern machines and up-to-date browsers work best with the JSMESS emulator.”
Gamers can experience emulated games from the Historical Software Collection from systems ranging from the Atari 2600 (1977), Atari 7800 ProSystem (1986), ColecoVision (1982), Magnavox Odyssey (1978) and Midway's Astrocade (1983). Check out the full collection here.
