According to Variety, How I Met Your Mother will get an hour-long series finale that will air on March 31 at 8 p.m. Usually most season and series finales air in the middle of May, so the choice of date here is odd. The show still gets high ratings for CBS, so it isn’t an issue of performance.

The choice of date is more than likely a product of CBS launching a new show called Friends with Better Lives immediately after the finale. After its debut following How I Met Your Mothers’ sendoff, the show will then move into the 8:30 p.m. timeslot on Monday nights in a comedy block that includes Two Broke Girls, Mike and Molly, and Mom. CBS is hoping that the How I Met Your Mother audience will transition to Friends with Better Lives, and this March date will help the new show gain some momentum before the summer.
