The standalone version of the zombie MMO DayZ has been released into the wild.

An early alpha version is up through Steam's Early Access program. It's also up for grabs on Day Z creator, Dean Hall's, website. That site is showing a ton of traffic hitting it, which means that people are getting their zombie survival kits ready.

DayZ was originally an Arma II  mod, and this is  the first non-mod trailer we've seen. The standalone version has been in development for a long time coming.

"Welcome to the gritty open world of DayZ, hit by a new and presently unknown infection which has wiped out most of the world's population. You are one of the few who have survived and now you must search this new wasteland in order to fight for your life against what is left of the indigenous population now infected with the disease. Go solo, team up with friends or take on the world as you choose your path in this brutal and chilling landscape using whatever means you stumble upon to survive."

Keep in mind that this is an early build of the game and players should heed the following:

"WARNING: THIS GAME IS EARLY ACCESS ALPHA. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO ACTIVELY SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME AND ARE PREPARED TO COPE WITH SERIOUS ISSUES AND POSSIBLE INTERRUPTIONS OF THE GAME FUNCTIONING."

Enjoy.
