The New York Times reports that mayor-elect Bill de Blasio will appoint Bill Bratton as the next NYPD Commissioner later this morning.

This will be Bratton's second term as head of the police force, as he first led the department from 1994 to 1996 under Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Bratton also served as Chief of Police for the LAPD from 2002 until 2009 and has acted as a consultant for the city of Oakland since January. The Times notes that Bratton has been the front-runner for the job since de Blasio began dropping his name during his campaign.

When Bratton takes the reigns from Ray Kelly, he will inherit a much different New York than the one he dealt with during the 1990s. Aside from the growing divide between police and the public, crime rates in the city have reached historic lows. Still, Bratton's selection doesn't appear to bode well for opponents of stop-and-frisk.
