Authorities finally caught up with a Colombian veterinarian who had allegedly beenplanting liquid heroin inside of puppies and shipping them to the U.S. for years.

The New York Daily News reports that 44-year-old Andrés López Elorza was finally apprehended in Lugo on Tuesday. He had lived there with his wife, maintaining a low profile despite being the subject of an eight-year, worldwide hunt.

According to authorities, Elorza surgically implanted tiny bags of heroin inside the abdominal cavities of young Labradors and Rottweilers at his Medellin farm. As soon as their scars healed, they were sent to the U.S.

When authorities raided Elorza's home in 2005, they discovered six dogs with drug bags strategically placed inside of their stomachs. This led to an international warrant being issued for his arrest.

Elorza is currently awaiting extradition to the U.S.
