Some proud new owners of the Xbox One, after waiting in line all night in their best Cosplay, got home to receive a big fat error code when trying to update the next-gen hardware. So far this seems to be limited but Microsoft has released a set of error codes to troubleshoot the problem if it happens to you.

A small number of users have also reported problems with the Xbox One’s hard drive. An inserted disc makes a crunching sound – yikes – and then spits itself back out, making the disc unreadable. If you have this problem there is no known fix yet so stay tuned to Complex and Microsoft’s support page. Here is the release for Microsoft Support:

"You may get an error code after updating your console software. Look for the error below and try the suggested troubleshooting steps.

From the There’s a problem with the update screen holding down both triggers and both bumpers at the same time. A new screen will appear that will display the Update Error across the bottom.

Note: The “x” digits vary according to several factors, such as region or country. Exclude the first 2 characters (Ox),l the next 8 characters will point to you to the error codes listed below.

If you have an Exxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx number displayed across the bottom of your screen after a system update you will not need the step above, locate your Exxx error message from the list below"

These are network errors. To resolve, you should troubleshoot your network connection.

  1. Select Check network connection. This test should determine if you have a working Internet connection from your Xbox One to your network device.
  2. Try to repair any errors that appear. See the Xbox One Network Connection Error Solution to help resolve any network connection errors.
  3. If you don’t receive any network errors or can’t resolve the errors you do see, you may have other problems with your network that are causing your Xbox One to time out or fail the system update. These issues can include the following:
    • Wireless interference
    • High packet loss
    • Latency.
  4. If any of these issues are causing a problem, try a wired connection.
  5. Select Start update again.
  6. If you see the same error message, power cycle your console by pressing the Xbox button on the front of the console for 5 seconds. After the console has shut down, unplug the power cord for 30 seconds.
  7. Plug the console back in and turn it on using the Xbox button on the console. Power cycling will reset the network card and clear the cache.
  8. Select Start update again.
  9. If any of the following apply, you may need a repair:
    • You can’t correct your network connection.
    • You can’t try a wired connection.
    • You continue to see this error while attempting the update with a wired connection and after power cycling the console.
  10. To submit a repair, visit the Xbox Online Service Center.

This error means that your Xbox One requires a system update, but the update is not currently available.

This error could occur if there’s an issue with the Xbox servers. Try again later.

If you received a console prior to the launch of Xbox One on November 22, 2013, and you’re trying to perform the initial setup, you’ll see this error. Be patient and wait until launch day. Consoles can’t be set up early.

E100 xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx

This indicates that there was an issue while updating your hardware, and that you’ll need to submit your console for a repair.

To submit a repair, visit the Xbox Online Service Center.

E101 xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx

This indicates that there was an error while trying to perform an Emergency Offline Update (EOU).
