Taking a cue from the Marvel playbook.

While Warner Bros. has begun taking baby steps towards building up the DC Comics film universe, another studio has officially announced their plans to take a page out of the Marvel Studios playbook. Sony CEO Michael Lynton revealed that the studio plans to build seveal spin-offs around The Amazing Spider-Man franchise: ""We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man. There are a number of scripts in the works." Co-chairman Amy Pascal added: "We are going to access Marvel's full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains."

So what does this mean exactly? There are a number of Spidey allies and rogues to choose from, but not many that would easily lend themsevles to their own film. Maybe Peter Parker's love interest turned super heroine Felicia Hardy/Black Cat perhaps? One thing's for sure: don't hold your breath for Disney, Marvel, Sony and 20th Century Fox to sit down and hash out the various movie rights, which would allow Spider-Man and the X-Men to appear in films with The Avengers, any time soon. In the meantime, look for Amazing Spider-Man 2 next May.
