Sony Online is bringing its popular free-to-play PC shooter Planetside 2to the PlayStation 4 and president John Smedley is throwing down some ambitious goals that aim to attract a Xbox audience. “We believe that Planetside 2 is going to be the massively multiplayer Halo for PlayStation 4," Smedley reportedly told IGN. "So we want to bring a completely new kind of gameplay to a completely new audience.”

There will be a difference between the PC gaming community and the console community playing Planetside 2. PC gamers will see updates more often and cross-platform play is, as yet, unsupported. So the idea is not to bring players from PC to PlayStation 4 but to let thousands of PS4 gamers jump into the massively multiplayer game as once and see what they’ve been missing. It's also an easy step for a generation of new PlayStation converts moving over, or nabbing both, generations of the new console.

Look out for the free-to-play Planetside 2 alongside the PlayStation 4 launch later this week.
