A series of tornadoes tore through the Midwest yesterday, killing at least six people in Illinois and leaving many more injured. Yesterday morning, officials issued warnings for portions of Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa. According to the National Weather Service, at least 77 tornadoes struck the region, with most of them happening in Illinois. However, the New York Times notes that officials warned of the same storm possibly being reported several times over.
One person was killed in Washington, Ill., which was hit the hardest. An 80-year-old man and his 78-year-old sister were also killed after a tornado struck their New Minden, Ill. farm. Melaney Arnold, spokeswoman for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, said that three more people were killed in Massaic County.
Fans watching the Chicago Bears play the Baltimore Ravens at Soldier Field were asked to leave the stands during the game's first quarter. The delay lasted for nearly two hours.
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said that 12 counties experienced storm damage, while utility company Ameren reported that over 35,000 customers had lost power in Missouri, mostly in St. Louis.
As of yesterday evening, officials were still evaluating the damage.
