The NYPD released a report detailing police firearm use which revealed that officers fired more bullets, shot more people and were shot more last year than in 2011.
Officers fatally shot 16 people last year, including high-profile incidents like the killing of 18-year-old Ramarley Graham, who was unarmed when a cop shot him inside of a Bronx residence. Furthermore, 30 people were struck by police gunfire last year, compared to 28 the previous year.
The report also mentions that 10 innocent bystanders were hit by police bullets fired at other suspects, while another four were hit when an officer's gun discharged by accident. One of the latter incidents led to a fatality.
On 24 occasions, officers opened fire on dogs, and in eight separate incidents, officers used their service weapons to commit suicide. In total, the report detailed 105 incidents, 54 of which were considered "adversarial" encounters with a suspect.
The 74-page report is released annually to explain every account of an officer discharging their weapon, no matter the reason.
