UPDATE: Despite hopeful reports that the dolphin had escaped, the New York Post reports that it was found dead on the beach around 11 a.m. this morning.

The dolphin that was trapped in Coney Island Creek yesterday has reportedly freed itself. After being spotted around 11 a.m. yesterday, the dolphin was struggling with a debris boom last night and authorities were concerned that its appearance in shallow water meant it was either sick or injured.

However, News 12 says the NYPD told them that they dug a hole in the boom and heard the dolphin made its exit during high tide. Gothamist also reports that an NYPD spokesperson told them that they had heard the dolphin swam away.

Though it's still unclear how the dolphin made its way to the creek in the first place, everyone should be relieved that it's now safe.
