After nearly 30 years, the "Subway Vigilante" has returned to headlines.
Bernhard Goetz, who shot four black teenagers after claiming they tried to rob him on a New York City subway train in December 1984, was arrested yesterday evening for allegedly selling a small amount of marijuana to an undercover cop.
Goetz, 65, reportedly met an undercover female officer near his apartment in Union Square around 5:45 p.m. After a brief conversation, they returned to his apartment to finalize the transaction for $30 worth of weed. Goetz was charged with criminal sale of mariuana.
The New York Daily News says that police sources told them Goetz was not the specific target.
On Dec. 22, 1984, Goetz shot Troy Canty, Barry Allen, James Ranseur and Darrell Cabey aboard a 2 Train in Manhattan. The shooting left Cabey paralyzed. Ramseur committed suicide on the 27th anniversary of the shooting, the victim of a prescription drug overdose.
Though Goetz was acquitted of attempted murder charges, he was convicted of criminal possession of a weapon and sentenced to six months in prison. He filed for bankruptcy in 1996 after Cabey won a $43 million civil suit against him.
