Here's one documentary that you won't want to miss next year: According to Uproxx, VH1 is producing a documentary on hip-hop as a cultural movement, based on record executive Steve Stoute's 2012 book, The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy. Billy Corben, the director of Cocaine Cowboys, is on board to develop the project, which will be made up of four parts and feature interviews from Dr. Dre, Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin, Cory Booker, Al Sharpton, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Tommy Hilfiger. In other words, a lot of cool people.
Per a snipper from the press release, the doc series—which will be titled The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip-Hop—will "take viewers where they’ve never been before," including "inside the car of fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger, as he drives through the streets of Harlem finding inspiration in baggy jeans" and "with Dr Dre as he first hears a rapper who calls himself Eminem." Yup, we're sold.
Now, so you know when to mark your calendars—the four-part documentary is set for a February 2014 premiere on VH1.
