San Jose, California Is the Richest City in America

Suffering from success.

Census Bureau data has identified San Jose, Calif. as the richest city in America. Last year, the median household income in the U.S. was $51,017, a figure the Los Angeles Times notes was 8.3 percent lower than it was in 2007 when adjusted for inflation. San Jose had the highest median household income with $90,737, edging out D.C., where $88,233 is the median.

Still, San Jose had a higher unemployment rate (8.6 percent) and poverty rate (10.8 percent)  than D.C. The rest of the top five wealthiest cities included Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Conn.; San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, Calif. and Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Mass. At the other end of the spectrum, Brownsville, Texas is the poorest city in America, as the average media income was just $30,953.
