Last month, we told you about a report which explained that in 2012, it cost New York City $167,731 to house each of its inmates every day. It basically costs more to house a prisoner in New York City for a year than it does to attend a Ivy League university for four years.
Al Jazeera America notes that the expense of incarcerating a prisoner in New York City is greater than four years of undergraduate tuition at Harvard University. Harvard's annual tuition is $38,891, or $155,564 for four years.
The takeaway here (aside from the fact that it costs New York City a ridiculous amount of money to operate its jails) is to go to Harvard, not jail. Taxpayers will thank you.
