Study Claims Majority of New Yorkers Are Ditching Condoms

So much for safe sex.

According to a recent study, New Yorkers love sex—just not safe sex. A poll by the city's health department has learned that, of the 4 million sexually active residents of New York City, only 31.8 percent said they used a condom the last time they had sex. This means that over 68 percent of respondents rolled the dice the last time they got laid.

The New York Post says that this reflects the same rate as when Mayor Bloomberg first took office over a decade ago, even though the city has spent millions marketing safe sex and handing out condoms during that span.

Furthermore, the survey revealed that 771,000 New Yorkers claimed to have had two or more sexual partners in the past year, while 457,000 claimed to have three or more. That's an increase of 47,000 over 2011 and 62,000 over 2003, which either means more New Yorkers are having sex, or more are lying about it.

According to numbers East Harlem was the most promiscuous neighborhood, while Pehlam Bay/Throggs' Neck was the least.

An upside is that, even though New Yorkers are having unprotected sex, 63 percent of adults in the 18 to 24 demographic are using them—an increase of four percent over 2009.
