Taking a cue from California, the state of New York is considering making "revenge porn" punishable by jail time. However, there's a distinct difference: New York's proposed law would apply to making the dirty pictures public. According to Gawker, senator Phil Boyle of Suffolk County revealed plans to roll out a bill similar to California's.
"If a young woman takes a picture of herself, sends it to the boyfriend, a couple of years later he's posting it, that would be included under our legislation and that's a very significant improvement in the law," he explained, adding that "80 percent of these pictures are 'selfies.'"
Boyle wants the crime to be considered a misdemeanor punishable by a year in jail and an accompanying $1,000 fine. Fellow senator Joseph A. Griffo and assemblyman Edward C. Braunstein have drafted a bill that would include selfies and bump the fine up to $30,000.
