"Doctor Who" to Go Insane in New "American Psycho" Production

Also: It'll be a musical.

Having just finished up filming his final appearance as the eleventh doctor on BBC's legendary series Doctor Who, star Matt Smith's next project is a highly anticipated one, to say the least—and it doesn't disappoint. According to BBC, Smith has officially signed on to portray another legendary character in pop culture, Patrick Bateman, in an upcoming, musical stage production of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel, American Psycho. He's no Scott Disick, of course, but this could be interesting.

It seems like the stage production will pretty closely follow the plot of Ellis' book—it'll be set in the late '80s, and follow a 26-year-old Patrick Bateman as he slowly devolves from sociopathic Wall Street banker to a vicious serial killer. Tony award-winning composter Duncan Sheik and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark scriptwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will adapt the book for stage, and Rupert Goold will direct.

Within hours of announcing Smith's casting, the show "almost completely" sold out. For those of you across the pond (and with access to scalpers, or something), the production will run between December 3 and January 25, 2014 in London's Almeida Theatre. A musical American Psycho—does this mean Patrick Bateman will be singing as he kills prostitutes and cats? That's a new kind of morbid.

Smith, who took on the role of the eleventh doctor in 2010 after David Tennant, will make his final appearance on Doctor Who in the show's upcoming Christmas special, at which point the character will regenerate to the twelfth doctor, portrayed by Peter Capaldi.
