Despite being released over a week ago, Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity still managed to dominate the box office this weekend over new releases like Captain Phillips and Machete Kills. According to EW, the 3D space film pulled in a whopping $44.2 million, bring its cumulative earnings to a total of $123.4 million—well over the $100 million mark in just ten days.
This is the second week that Gravity is number one, after it debuted last week to a record-breaking $55.6 million—the highest October box office opening since 2011. Much of this is likely due to rave reviews and 3D/IMAX showings, proving that people will shell out the extra cash for 3D if the movie is worth it.
As for the other new movies released this weekend: The Tom Hanks-starring Captain Phillips debuted in second with a promising $22.6 million, which is good news considering that the film is already getting some Oscar buzz for Hanks' performance as the real-life Captain Richard Phillips. Machete Kills, on the other hand, disappointed greatly in the number four spot, and only earned about $3.79 million total—terrible numbers considering it was opening weekend.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, which was released late last month, came in at number three with a solid $14.2 million.
