The writers weren't allowed to kill Dexter off.

Finally, we have someone to blame for the epic shitstorm/let down of a series finale that was Dexter's last episode. According to producer John Goldwyn in a new interview with Vulture, writers were instructed to make sure Dexter survived the series finale—despite the fact that he pretty much spent the entire series doing terrible things like killing people—because they wanted him alive when the show was over. Basically, writers weren't allowed to do the one thing that would have actually made the terrible finale slightly, slightly better.

So, instead—spoiler alert for the shittiest plot twist ever!—they made Dexter a lumberjack. PLAUSIBLE PLOT. People loved that one.

It's not clear why Showtime was so insistent on making sure Dexter stays alive; though there's been talk of a spin-off, that wouldn't focus on Dexter at all, and the idea of a movie just makes no sense at this point—I'd like to say that also Showtime would know better than to pursue a Dexter movie at this point, but since they were so insistent on making sure Dexter stays alive, that's clearly not the case.
