Food trucks in D.C. have been hit hard by the government shutdown, as many of their regular customers have furloughed. Even with a decrease in business, mobile restaurants in the area still made monthly food truck festival Truckeroo happen last Friday. The event also functioned as a fundraiser for victims of last month's Navy Yard shooting.
Food Truck Association political director and BBQ Bus owner Che Ruddell-Tabisola told DCist that a total of $1,700 was raised. "We were genuinely touched by people's generosity, especially in light of the shutdown," he said. "There were some unexpectedly touching moments too. One individual having lunch shared with us that she lost two coworkers in the shooting and thanked us for collecting donations."
The proceeds will be sent to the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region's fund, which goes straight to the families of the victims.
