Just days after announcing their plans to launch a Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul, AMC has announced that they're also going to launch a "companion series" to their most popular series, The Walking Dead, which will be a spinoff of the show.
As it's still early in production, there isn't that much info out on the series just yet—but according to a comment from AMC president Charlie Collier in a press release, it'll focus on a new set of characters battling the same walker-filled world that Rick Grimes and co. are: "We look forward to working with [Robert Kirkman, Gale Ann Hurd and David Alpert] again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse."
As of last season, The Walking Dead is one of the highest rated shows on television—this past year, it consistently broke cable TV ratings and managed to average over 12 million viewers per week, so it's really no wonder AMC wants to milk the franchise for all its worth. It'll be a while before we ever see the spinoff, though—it's not set to premiere until 2015.
"After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe," comic series creator Robert Kirkman said in a statement. "The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."
Season four of The Walking Dead will premiere on October 13th.
