Exclusive Preview: 3D Covers for "Superman #23.2" and "Aquaman #23.1"

See the villains of the DC Universe leap right off the page.

What would happen if the villains of DC won? That’s the question the company is set to answer throughout September as it launches “Villains Month.” For 30 days, all 52 books at the company will kick the superheroes to the curb and focus on the most infamous villains in the DC Universe. The centerpiece of this storyline is a brand new crossover event, titled Forever Evil. This seven-issue epic places Lex Luthor, Sinestro, Black Manta, and a group of classic foes against a twisted version of the Justice League, known as the Crime Syndicate, that is trying to take over the Earth.

To kick “Villains Month” off in style, DC is putting out 3D cover variants for all 52 of its books. The company recently gave us an exclusive look at the 3D covers for Superman #23.2, which will star Brainiac in place of the Man of Steel, and Aquaman #23.1, starring Black Manta. Take a look at the stunning 3D covers in the slideshow above.

Aquaman #23.1: "Black Manta"

Writers: Geoff Johns and Tony Bedard
Artist: Claude St. Aubin
3D cover artists: Paul Pelletier, Sean Parsons, and Rod Reis

No character has benefitted from the launch of DC’s New 52 as much as Aquaman. Under the writing of Geoff Johns, the King of Atlantis has reclaimed his spot as one of the powerhouses of the company with epic tales of action and royal intrigue every month. Obviously Aquaman’s “Villains Month” issue focuses on Black Manta, his most dangerous enemy. In this story, by writers Tony Bedard and Geoff Johns, we see Black Manta meet the Crime Syndicate for the first time, and things obviously don’t go well. This issue has a blood-soaked 3D cover by Paul Pelletier, Sean Parsons, and Rod Reis, featuring the Black Manta standing triumphant over a fallen Aquaman. Check it out:

Superman #23.2: "Brainiac"

Writer: Tony Bedard
Artist: Pascal Alixe
3D cover artist: Gene Ha

In Superman #23.2, writer Tony Bedard sheds some light on the backstory of one of the Man of Steel’s oldest foes: Brainiac. This is an unsettling origin update that combines sci-fi action and a horror movie atmosphere to give us a chilling study of this computerized menace. Along with some jaw-dropping interior art by Pascal Alixe, the 3D cover for the issue was illustrated by Gene Ha, one of the industry's top talents. Here we get an in-your-face glimpse of Brainiac in his updated outfit gloating over a prone Superman in the background. Check out the 3D motion in the video below:
