This year’s Tokyo Game Show is in full swing and last night offered up some promising news for for the legions of ravenous Metal Gear fans out there. Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions debuted 12 minutes of in-game footage from Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prequel companion to the much anticipated Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The video showcases a more in-depth look at Kojima’s new FOX engine than had previously been shown at either the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary or the Pax Prime 2012 demo. The game’s increasingly open-world nature and Splinter Cell-ish control mechanics are all courtesy of this new engine.

For those of you that are confused, Ground Heroes is a stand alone adventure featuring Big Boss that takes place a year after Peacewalker and nine years prior to the events of Phantom Pain. It is meant not only as an expositive measure to bridge the events of Peacewalker and Phantom Pain, but also as a means of introducing fans of the series to the brand new mechanics of Metal Gear Solid V.
