Nostalgia junkies will salivate over this collection of New York City subway maps, which show how they've evolved over the years. The current map was created in the image of designer Massimo Vignelli's 1972 diagram which valued clarity more than geography. It pissed a lot of people off, and was eventually updated to something slightly more geographically realistic. 

Previous maps were excavated from the NYC Subway records, and there's even a website featuring images of each map from 1924 through the present day. Above are maps from 1924, 1949 1972 and 2012. Below is a GIF that recaps the many different subway maps the city has used over the years:
