Yesterday’s leak of Grand Theft Auto V’s map has left a lot of people wondering exactly how big Rockstar Games’ monolithic series has grown.

While tech heads understood the significance of the leak, many serial regular dudes thought it looked ‘small’ or ‘boring’ due probably to the scale of the actual city area versus that of the country. The leak supposedly originated from an accidental early sale of a Brady Games Guide and if the scan is legitimate , the in-game world has become a monster. It hasn’t doubled or tripled or even quadrupled in size, it’s now a little over 7 times larger than GTA IV, 3.5 times larger than GTA: San Andreas, and 4 times larger than Red Dead Redemption. At a total area of 49 sq. miles the map is larger than Red Dead, GTA IV, and San Andreascombined, as promised. All on the same hardware limitations Rockstar North has been working with for almost a decade now.

The most pressing question for Edinburgh-based developer Rockstar North is who or what exactly they are sacrificing to the Baphomet on the regular to be able to keep pumping out these games using basically the same RAGE engine and the same hardware capabilities for the last seven years. Not to mention that GTA III, a game that blew minds when it came out 12 years ago, Rockstar somehow managed to fit it on your cellphone.

Below is a rough approximation of the size and scale of Rockstar’s games so far.

  • GTA III = 3 sq. mi.
  • GTA: Vice City = 3.5 sq. mi.
  • GTA: San Andreas = 13.6 sq. mi.
  • GTA IV = 6.8 sq. mi.
  • Red Dead Redemption = 12 sq. mi.
  • GTA V = 49 sq. mi.

Don't get lost.
