Director: Les Blank
German director Werner Herzog is just as crazy and determined as the characters who populate his movies. For instance, one of Herzog's best films, Aguirre, the Wrath of God, follows a crazed conquistador looking for El Dorado in the 16th century. Herzog shot the the film on location in the Amazon, and the cast looks suitably terrified.
Burden of Dreams documents Herzog's herculean struggle to make 1982's Fitzcarraldo, about a man moving a steamship over a Peruvian mountain. During the shoot for Fitzcarraldo, Herzog actually moved the steamship over a mountain, and this became Les Blanks's doc. Levels. —RS
