Director: Sacha Gervasi

Even if you're not a head-banging metal head, Anvil! The Story of Anvil is a foolproof crowd-pleaser. Because, well, everyone needs a best friend, right? That one person who'll always be by your side, building up your confidence, playing into your seemingly overreaching dreams of taking over the world. All struggle mixtape and blog rappers have them, as do wannabe filmmakers and artists of every kinds. Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner—the two members of the once-popular Canadian heavy metal band Anvil—have each other, and filmmaker Sacha Gervasi's charming comeback story Anvil! thrives on their camaraderie.

Think of Anvil! as the lighthearted counterpart to Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler. Like that film's Randy "The Ram," Kudlow and Reiner want another chance to occupy the spotlight; middle-age is in full swing, and, rather than settle into retirement anonymity, they still want to rock. Anvil! depicts their funny, fast-paced, and at times heartbreaking trials and tribulations. You'll feel like an honorary metal head once its over. —MB
