Amazon Denies Smartphone Rumors, Life (Surprisingly) Goes On

"We have no plans to offer a phone this year," the company says.

For the seven people who were hoping Amazon was going to release its own smartphone, the company is now reporting that it has no plans to drop a handset by the end of 2013.

"We have no plans to offer a phone this year," Amazon said in a statement, "and if we were to launch a phone in the future, it would not be free."

This contradicts a previous report by a former Wall Street Journal staffer that Amazon was working on a strategy to release the "long-planned smartphone" for free. Rumors of an Amazon-branded smartphone have been swirling for some time, but with CEO Jeff Bezos attempting to resurect The Washington Post, we don't see how he has time for anything else right now.
