Welcome to New York City, where people are paying as much—if not more—for storage units than they are for homes. 56 Leonard, Tribeca's extraordinary luxury skyscraper of the future, just sold 200-square-feet of storage space in its basement for $300,000.
People are honestly paying between $2,000 and $6,000 per square foot to live in the 60-story, 145-unit high-rise. But for a place where a four-bedroom penthouse sells for $47 million, $1,500 to $1,800 per square foot of storage space is right on par.
The modernist building has 76 units in its basement beginning at $72,000 for 40 square-feet, but if that's not enough, you can size up in space and price: $214,000 for 119 square-feet. If you're curious, the $300,000 unit went to millionaires who purchased a three-bedroom in the building for between $5 million and $9.25 million.
The New York Post notes that, as of July, the national average sale price for exisitng homes was $260,000. As for 56 Leonard, well, it will open during the summer of 2015. Get your money up.
