The comically difficult Aban Hawkins and the 1001 Spikes – so named to account for the number of lives you're given (and will lose) in navigating an absolutely insane barrage of traps in a vast Indiana Jones-esque temple – appears to be hitting PS4, if it being playable with Sony's next-gen Dual Shock controller at an industry soiree Friday is any indication.

If you're a fan of maddeningly difficult games in the vein of Dark Souls or Super Meat Boy, this is great news. After starting life as a $1 entry on Xbox Live Indie Games, 1001 Spikes was already slated for release on 3DS, Vita, PS3 and Wii U – adding it to PS4's ever-growing library of indie titles is a no-brainer.

More importantly, it's going to have multiplayer. I was lucky enough to get play a little bit of four-player co-op at the event, wherein Hawkins and three other characters had to survive an expectedly ridiculously punishing level design that had most of us dying in a matter of seconds. (Full disclosure: playing 1001 Spikes under an influence is a recipe for failure.) Despite the almost insurmountable challenge, though, playing a game like this with four players is a really good time.

Sony hasn't released a trailer with multiplayer in it yet, but I got word from the developers that co-op is just one planned mode – there will also be straight-up head-to-head versus gameplay, so Rayman style griefers can rejoice.

In the meantime, check out the developers' last trailer to get a sense of just how f*$#ing hard 1001 Spikes really is.
